In 2001, a handful of friends on Albert Park Lake started what would become Australia's first LGBTIQA+ rowing club. Founder Annie South called it "a rowing club in the queer community and a queer club in the rowing community." Twenty-five years later, both halves are still going strong, and only one of them involves Lycra.
Queer Forever is the club's story, told by the people who lived it. It runs to more than 100 pages, so if it happened, it's probably in here. There are the founders and the second-hand boats. There are the Pride Marches and the trivia nights that paid for a fleet. There's the boat that sprang a leak at the Head of the Yarra and was rowed home held together with duct tape. There's a record-setting win, and medals from Montreal to Paris. And there are the hundreds of people who turned up at dawn knowing nothing about rowing and found a community.
It's a book about rowing, mostly. It's also about what happens when people who were told they didn't belong in sport build a place where everyone does.
Funny, moving and occasionally soggy, it's for every Argonaut past and present, and for anyone who has ever needed a crew.
