The APSM & Melbourne Argonauts pre-season time trial
The Dowagers Cup Time Trial (16 Sep 17)

The Dowagers Cup Time Trial is designed to help crews prepare for the upcoming head race season particularly HOY (Head of the Yarra, for our newer crews) while raising funds for the Melbourne Argonauts' new oars! Genius, right!? In preparation for HOY, The Dowagers Cup Time Trial takes mostly bow-side corners, and boats go anticlockwise around the lake.

We would love to see all eights and octos entering this fun mixed event — and don’t forget, while it might be training, it will also be a bit of good, competitive fun.

Continuing the positive APSM / Argos relationship, APSM will host a bar while the Argos will host the BBQ, also located at the APSM Boat House Bar.

All boats will start between the two red marker buoys at the Power House end of the lake. They will proceed anticlockwise around the lake, heading north and leaving the island and the red buoy at the APSM end of the lake to the cox's left to turn south to leave the red buoy at the Power House end of the lake to the cox's left, to turn through the finish line, thus completing a lap and starting the second lap. They then complete a second lap and turn again through the finish line to finish the event.

Each boat will be timed. The boat with the fastest time wins the event and takes home the Dowagers Cup. Four smaller cups will also be awarded: for the fastest octo, fastest men’s boat, fastest mixed boat and fastest female boat.

Other event details

Safety: this is not a regatta and as such the lake will be operating as normal. We have chosen a time when there is little activity, but normal lake / waterway runs must be observed. We will have tinny positioned at the narrowest part of the lake (the neck). This is to

ensure boats are staying to the right. With only 180 seconds separating the first boat to the last in each round, there should be no reason for boats to be traveling at speed in opposite directions, but we will have the tinny as a precaution.

No-overtaking sections: There will be a red buoy near the approach to the island, and there will be no overtaking allowed between this buoy and the red buoy at the APSM end of the lake, which is the turning point. Also, no overtaking will be allowed to the south of a line between the two starting buoys (the start / finish line).

Boats are available: We have several boats available at no charge, as per the list below. You are welcome to book these boats if you don’t feel like bringing your own. If you want to bring your own boat, parking will be at APSM.

Please email John Gorman at john@gormanenterprises.com.au and Mitchell Davey at captain@maqrc.org, if you wish to use one of our boats.

Parking: Ample car and boat parking space is available at the APSM end of the lake. How to enter

Enter on line at http://www.melbourneargonauts.com/. Closing time for entries is 5PM, Saturday 16 September 2017.

We look forward to receiving your entries! Get in soon, as the Dowagers Cup promises to fill up fast!
